Planning a Coliving Adventure with a Furry Friend? Here are 4 Things you Need to Consider:

Nothing beats hitting the open road with your furry friend, but have you considered what the implications are when it comes to living in a shared space with your pet? The number one rule when living in a pet-friendly coliving space is to be cognisant and respectful of your coliving community. It’s important to do your research and have an open and honest conversation with your coliving community so you can gain a mutual understanding of what it means to bring a pet into the shared space.

Additional factors include your location, your lifestyle, your personal finances, and the house rules. Interested in learning more about coliving with your pet? Keep reading!

Location

If you’re living in a coliving space with a pet, it’s important to consider where you will be spending the majority of your time. Your physical location throughout the course of the day or workweek plays a huge role in pet ownership. If you have to be in a physical office space for long hours, it’s important to consider how your pet will be affected. Can you properly care for them while you're away at work? How will your roommates or coliving community feel when your pet is left behind?

Additionally, you have to determine if your coliving space is ideal for accommodating your pet. Does this coliving space allow pets? Is there a yard where your dog can roam and get the exercise they need? Will you be living within a close proximity to a park or outdoor space where your furry friend can flourish and socialize with other dogs?

Lifestyle

Before you decide to live in a coliving space with your pet, it’s important to analyze and determine what your lifestyle is. If you’re a homebody and you’re living amongst a coliving community that always prefers to stay within the shared space, bringing an animal into the mix may act as a distraction or make the space feel small. If you’re adventurous, and love to take your pet outdoors or on hikes, having a pet in the shared living space may not be an issue.

It’s also important to consider the lifestyles and characteristics of the people you will be living with. If you’re going to be in a shared space that has a heavy emphasis on coworking and collaboration, a pet may be a distraction. If you’re choosing a space where the community is more flexible, it may be more feasible to have a rowdy or rambunctious dog.

Finances

When you have a pet, you’re not only responsible for yourself but you also have to be able to provide for and protect your pooch. In order to give your precious pup the best possible life, you have to make sure you’re financially stable and able to provide food, shelter, and maybe even the occasional toy or unexpected vet bill. It’s important that you search for a pet-friendly rental that fits within your budget and accommodates both you and your pet comfortably.

House Rules

House rules exist to make sure that everyone in the coliving space has a positive experience so it’s extremely important that you learn about any and all pet policies before introducing your furry friend to your coliving community.

Like any rental, researching and understanding the agreement prior to making a commitment is essential. When searching for a coliving space, it’s imperative that you do your research and determine if the space you’re interested in can accommodate your pet. After all, you wouldn’t want to bring your best friend into an environment where they aren’t welcome! Nothing beats introducing your furry friend to a group of loyal dog lovers that will cherish and appreciate them just as much as you do.
